Burgh House is a Queen Anne Grade I listed building, erected in 1703 for a Quaker family, the Sewells. Located in the heart of old Hampstead, it was subsequently home to many professional men and their families (also at one time as an officers mess for the Hampstead Militia) until just before the war. After falling into disrepair, and a successful campaign by the local community to save it from the developers, it was reopened as a Community Arts Centre in 1979. It hosts many functions, including Concerts, Recitals, Lectures, public and private meetings, and is home to many local societies including the Hampstead Music Club. One of the rooms is an Art Gallery with regular Exhibitions. It is also the home of the Hampstead Museum of Local History with changing displays, featuring Constable and including items from the Allingham collection, and an Isokon chair. A shop sells books, maps, souvenirs and everything about Hampstead. It is an attractive venue for Weddings (licensed for Civil marriages), parties, receptions, anniversaries, baby namings, memorial events, book launches, and corporate events. The House is approached through a delightful prize winning terraced garden, originally designed by Gertrude Jekyll and maintained in her style. The House incorporates a panelled Music Room, original "barley sugar" staircase balusters, panelled rooms and original window shutters. |
